Tasmanian Tree Fern (Dicksonia antarctica): Jurassic Atmosphere in Your Garden

Some plants are not just plants — they are a gateway to a different era. Dicksonia antarctica — the Tasmanian Tree Fern — is exactly that. When I finally found a specimen after a long search, I stood looking at that small plant in its terracotta pot, thinking that it represents a lineage 180 million years old.

What Is Dicksonia antarctica?

Native to the temperate rainforests of southern Australia and Tasmania, this tree fern is not a true "tree" — it is a fern. However, it develops a thick, fibrous trunk (caudex) over time and can reach several metres in height. The entire trunk is actually composed of accumulated root tissue, which is why it can survive being uprooted and replanted if watered promptly.

Its fronds are elegant, softly hairy, and bright green. New fronds unfurl from the central crown in a spiral — the famous "fiddlehead" curl. This opening movement is a spectacle in itself.

Will It Grow in Sakarya?

Dicksonia antarctica prefers a mild, humid climate. Though considered hardy to USDA zones 8–9, Sakarya winters can be challenging. During severe frost (below -8°C) the fronds are damaged, but if the trunk (caudex) is protected the plant can produce new fronds in spring.

The safest approach: grow it in a pot. A potted specimen can be moved to a cool but frost-free location before hard frost. Larger specimens can be overwintered in place by wrapping the trunk and insulating the crown.

Growing Conditions

Light

Semi-shade to full shade is ideal. Avoid direct midday sun; morning sun or filtered light is preferred.

Soil and Pot

Acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained compost. Good pot drainage is essential.

Watering

Water the trunk, keep the soil moist — but avoid pouring water into the crown during winter. Soil moisture must be maintained consistently.

Overwintering

In Sakarya it can overwinter outside down to -5°C; below that the fronds will burn but the trunk usually survives. For safer overwintering: wrap the trunk with hessian or fleece; stuff the crown with paper or leaves; move potted specimens to a cool, bright indoor location (5–8°C ideal).
