Elaeagnus ebbingei has been growing as a hedge in my garden for 5 years — in poor soil, full sun, without complaint. In autumn it releases that incredible scent while also bearing fruit. Birds carry the seeds everywhere and new plants keep sprouting.
My introduction to Elaeagnus ebbingei came during a nursery visit. Suggested as a 'hedge plant', I didn't take it very seriously at first — but 5 years later it has become one of the most valued plants in the garden.
It's not any single feature that makes Elaeagnus ebbingei special — it's the combination of several at once:
It was a small sapling when I got it from the nursery. I planted it in a sunny spot with poor soil — without any soil preparation. It grew strongly from the first year. I maintain its hedge form with annual pruning.
My most interesting observation: birds eat the ripe fruits and carry the seeds all over the garden. Elaeagnus seedlings now sprout spontaneously in various spots around the garden — a testament to how vigorous and productive this species is.
