My 2-year-old Kütahya sour cherry sapling has established itself well in the garden. Being a local variety from this region, I experience almost no disease problems. I share the taste, care notes, and why I chose the Kütahya variety.
Kütahya sour cherry is a local variety named after Kütahya province in Turkey. Having adapted to the region's climate and soil over centuries, it presents far fewer disease problems compared to imported or bred varieties. That's exactly why I chose it.
When selecting fruit trees for the garden, my priorities are always regional adaptation and disease resistance. Kütahya sour cherry stands out on both counts:
The sapling is now 2 years old and well established. It has developed multiple main branches and is building a balanced canopy. Still holding its leaves in mid-autumn — a sign of a healthy, active tree. I expect the first fruit in years 3–4.
I have done zero spraying in two years. No signs of brown rot or leaf spot — confirmation that choosing a regional variety was the right call.
