Note

A leguminous tree from the Mediterranean and West Asia, native to Turkey. It is a symbol of spring in Istanbul. Purple flowers open on bare branches before the leaves appear; sometimes there is a second flowering in autumn. The flowers are edible and can be added to salads, gözleme, pickles and syrup. Its nitrogen-fixing root nodules benefit neighbouring plants.
