Native to China and Japan and evergreen in winter. With a golden-yellow central band on dark green leaves, it is one of the most eye-catching winter-green shrubs in the garden. Its nitrogen-fixing root nodules improve poor soils. The fruit turns red-orange when ripe, is high in vitamin C and is edible.
