Li Jujube: A Rare Treasure Growing from the Root

Some trees in the garden make you wait all year, then suddenly give back everything at once. The Li jujube is exactly that kind of tree. Right now the branches are bending under the weight of fruit — harvest time has come.

Our Li jujube is not grafted. It grew naturally from the root. This is an important detail because ungrafted trees have healthier, deeper and more resilient root systems. Every sucker that comes from below carries the same Li characteristics — making it easy to propagate.

What is Li Jujube?

Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is a fruit tree of Chinese origin with thousands of years of history. Li is one of the most popular and delicious varieties — large, fleshy, sweet fruits ideal for both fresh and dried consumption. Fresh it has the texture and taste of an apple; dried it resembles a date.

Known as 'Red Date' in China, jujube also grows in Turkey but the Li variety is rare — nearly impossible to find in markets.

Why Is It So Valuable?

Nutritional value: 20 times richer in vitamin C than oranges. Also very high in iron, potassium, magnesium and B vitamins. Used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years — sleep-regulating, immunity-boosting, nervous system supporting properties.

Hardiness: Extremely drought tolerant. Grows even in poor soils. Resistant to pests and diseases. No chemical spraying needed.

Productivity: Our tree bore so much fruit this year the branches couldn't hold it. Not always like this, but the Li variety is generally very productive.

The Advantage of Root-Growing

In grafted trees, incompatibility can sometimes occur between rootstock and scion. In a root-grown Li jujube, this problem doesn't exist. Longer-lived, healthier, and the suckers that emerge from below carry the same characteristics as the parent tree — pull them and plant elsewhere for free seedlings.

How to Consume

Fresh: Harvested while yellow-green, before full ripening. Bitten like an apple — slightly sweet and crispy. Left to ripen fully, it turns red, softer and sweeter.

Dried: Thinly sliced and sun-dried or oven-dried. Can be consumed year-round or brewed as tea.

Tea: Dried jujubes are boiled and drunk as tea. Particularly known for its calming effect at night.

If you're looking for space in your garden and can only plant one fruit tree — I recommend Li jujube. Rare, delicious, healthy and easy to care for. A tree that stands right at the center of the cycle.
