Koi Fish: The Pond's Quiet Partners

Scientific Identity

Koi is the ornamental, colorfully bred variety of Cyprinus rubrofuscus (in some sources classified as Cyprinus carpio haematopterus), belonging to the carp family Cyprinidae. Centuries of selective breeding in Japan produced today's vivid colors and patterns. In Japanese it is also known as 'nishikigoi' (brocaded carp).

Permaculture Value

Koi play an important role in the closed ecosystem of a garden pond. By eating mosquito larvae and other small aquatic insects, they provide natural pest control. Their waste becomes a natural nutrient/fertilizer source for water plants - creating a nice loop especially with rooted aquatics like water lilies. Their movement also contributes to oxygenating the water. In a well-balanced pond ecosystem they largely take care of themselves, making them a low-maintenance permaculture element.

Varieties and Appearance

Koi are bred in dozens of different color and pattern varieties. In our pond we have veiltail (fantail) white individuals alongside orange-white and red-orange patterned ones. Veiltail koi stand out especially for their broad, flowing fins; as they glide through the water they move almost like silk fabric.

How to Care for Them

An adequately deep pond matters for koi - deep enough not to freeze solid in winter and not to overheat in summer, generally at least 80-100 cm is recommended. Water quality needs to stay balanced, avoiding excess nutrient or waste buildup - plants and any filtration system help with this. Regular but moderate feeding is enough in summer; in winter, as water temperature drops and their metabolism slows, feeding is largely stopped or greatly reduced.

From the Garden

The koi in our pond live quite low-maintenance; they largely manage on their own, and we just toss in food now and then. Moving among the water lily leaves and other water plants, with the sky and trees reflected on the surface, they make up one of the most peaceful moments in the pond.
