Heuchera: The Color Master of the Shade

Do you have a shady corner in your garden? Under trees, against a wall, in the shadow of a veranda... Most plants struggle in these spots. Heuchera steps in exactly here — not accepting the shade, but turning it into a stage.

I have several heuchera varieties in my garden. As you can see in the photo, the color range is incredible: burgundy, deep purple, light green, yellow-green, silver... All together, all at once. Few plants offer this much color without needing flowers.

What is Heuchera?

Heuchera is a perennial groundcover native to North America, from the Saxifragaceae family. Also known as Coral Bells or Alumroot, it stands out for its leaf colors and textures. In summer it produces small bell-shaped flowers on tall slender stems — a perfect nectar source for bees and hummingbirds.

Why It Belongs in Your Garden

Several things make heuchera special. It tolerates shade but grows beautifully in partial sun too. It's evergreen in all four seasons — adding color to the garden even in winter. Extremely easy to care for and disease resistant. When used as groundcover, it suppresses weed growth.

Valuable from a permaculture perspective too: covering the soil conserves moisture, provides organic matter, attracts beneficial insects.

Variety Richness

There are hundreds of heuchera varieties. In my garden several different ones grow side by side — the color contrast is mesmerizing. Popular varieties include 'Palace Purple' (deep purple), 'Caramel' (caramel-orange), 'Lime Rickey' (neon green) and 'Silver Scrolls' (silver).

How to Grow It

Prefers humus-rich, well-draining, moist soil. May struggle in heavy clay — improve with compost. Plant in spring or autumn. Once a year in early spring, remove old leaves. Every 2-3 years, aerate the root zone or divide and propagate.

Watering: In drought, one deep watering per week is sufficient. Avoid leaving leaves wet — can encourage fungal disease.
