Calliandra surinamensis: The Pink Powder Puff

Calliandra surinamensis is a perennial flowering shrub in the subfamily Mimosoideae of the family Fabaceae (legumes), native to South America. It is also known as the pink powder puff. Rather than typical legume petals, its flowers are made up of long, slender pink-and-white stamen clusters, giving them the look of a silk tassel or powder brush. The leaves are finely feathery, compound, and mimosa-like in appearance.

Like most members of the Fabaceae family, Calliandra can form a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria on its roots, naturally enriching the soil - which makes it valuable as a "support plant" in permaculture design. Its flowers are also a rich nectar source, particularly for honeybees, butterflies, and some bird species. The dense, showy flower structure makes it a good choice for gardens aiming to increase pollinator diversity.

In our garden, Calliandra surinamensis has come through winters without serious trouble, suggesting our microclimate offers it enough shelter. Its pink powder-puff flowers make a lovely contrast against the surrounding wild grasses and stones on the ground.
