Roses from My Garden: Yellow, Red, Pink, White and That Unforgettable Scent

The first scent that reaches me when I step into the garden in the morning is the scent of roses. Especially on mornings after rain, that mix of wet soil and rose aroma is something else. I've been trying to describe this scent for years, words fall short.

I have four colors of roses in my garden: red, pink, yellow and white. Each has its own character. Red is powerful and passionate, pink elegant and gentle, yellow cheerful and vibrant, white pure and serene. All in the same garden, all complementing each other.

Rosa — A Love Story of Thousands of Years

The rose (Rosa) is a perennial shrub from the Rosaceae family. There are more than 300 species and thousands of registered varieties worldwide. From ancient Egypt to Ottoman palaces, from the French perfume industry to English garden tradition, it has held a special place in every era of human history.

Among all this variety, I prefer roses in my garden that are fragrant, repeat-flowering and disease-resistant. We use no chemical sprays, so healthy variety selection is critical.

Red Rose

That velvety red with its layered structure in the photo is a classic hybrid tea rose. Red roses are the strongest accent in the garden. On a sunny day that deep red color seems too intense even for a photograph.

Most red roses have a strong aroma. Ours is most intense in the early morning hours and softens as the sun rises. This makes morning garden walks indispensable.

Pink Rose

Pink roses are the most romantic corner of the garden for me. Across that wide spectrum from light to deep pink I have several different varieties. Pink roses tend to be more resilient and more prolific bloomers, making them ideal for beginning gardeners.

Yellow Rose

Yellow roses bring joy to the garden. Those sun-colored petals brighten even a dark corner. Yellow roses were historically considered more delicate but modern varieties are much hardier. Ours is healthy and blooms abundantly every year.

White Rose

White roses are the purest corner of the garden. Especially in evening light, as the sun lowers, those white petals seem almost to glow. In terms of scent, white roses often carry the strongest aroma.

Rose in the Permaculture Garden

Seeing the rose as merely ornamental is a big mistake. From a permaculture perspective a much richer picture emerges. Flowers are an important nectar source for bees and beneficial insects. The fruits known as rosehips are a vitamin C storehouse, usable for tea and jam. Leaves and petals are edible, can be added to salads and desserts. Rose water and rose oil can be obtained from the petals. Its thorny structure creates a natural hedge and protective barrier.

Organic Rose Care

Is it possible to grow roses without chemicals? Absolutely yes. Our garden has had no chemicals for years. The secret: right variety selection, right location, right soil.

Soil preparation: Roses love deep, humus-rich soil. Add plenty of compost before planting. Mulching: Organic mulch around the roots. Both conserves moisture and prevents weeds. Pruning: Strong pruning in spring, removing spent flowers throughout summer. Organic protection: Garlic water and nettle fertilizer are effective for pest control. Horsetail (Equisetum) tea can be used against fungal diseases instead of copper sulfate.

If you don't have a rose in your garden, start this year. Start with one variety, get to know it, then add others. Growing roses requires patience but every morning when that scent greets you as you step into the garden, all the effort instantly gains value.
