Acer palmatum Butterfly: The Most Elegant of Variegated Maples

Among the hundreds of Japanese maple varieties, Butterfly stands apart. While other varieties draw attention with red or purple tones, Butterfly offers a much more subtle and sophisticated beauty. That white-cream border on the grey-green leaves, as if each leaf has been individually crafted.

We have this tree in our garden and I look at it every day. Small, controlled, with fine branches. I know it will only become more beautiful as it grows.

Scientific Identity

Full name: Acer palmatum Butterfly. Family: Sapindaceae. Species: Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple). Cultivar: Butterfly. Origin: Japan and Korea. Type: Deciduous small tree or large shrub.

The Butterfly cultivar was developed in the Netherlands in the 1960s and has since become one of the most popular variegated Japanese maple varieties worldwide.

Leaf Characteristics

The most distinctive feature setting Butterfly apart is its leaves. Five to seven lobed, deeply cut palmate shape. Color: grey-green center, white to cream edges, sometimes slight pink tones visible especially in spring and autumn. Size: smaller leaves compared to other Acer palmatum varieties, giving it a delicate appearance. In autumn leaves turn orange-red while the white border remains visible in warm tones.

Growth Characteristics

Slow growing, which is both advantage and disadvantage. Advantage: suitable for small gardens, stays controlled. Disadvantage: takes time to mature. Mature height: 2-3 meters, sometimes reaching 4 meters. Form: upright vase-like growth form with branches spreading at the top. Lifespan: decades, with proper care can live over a century.

Why Rare and Valuable?

Acer palmatum Butterfly finds very little place in commercial cultivation. Its slow growth makes production challenging. For this reason finding a quality Butterfly sapling is becoming increasingly difficult and prices are rising.

In our garden we want to protect and propagate this plant. Every Butterfly sapling is a heritage for future generations. Keeping records with correct variety names is essential to preserving the identity and value of the plant.

Care

Light: Partial shade ideal. Morning sun, afternoon shade. Direct summer sun can cause leaf scorch, especially the white parts are sensitive. Soil: Acidic, humus-rich, well-draining. pH 5.5-6.5. Does not like lime, acidify with peat or sulfur if needed. Watering: Regular not irregular. In dry summers deep watering twice weekly. Wind: Choose a sheltered spot, delicate leaves can be damaged by wind. Pruning: Minimum. Only dry and crossing branches may be removed. Do not disturb the natural form. Fertilizer: Slow-release organic fertilizer in spring, special mix for acid-loving plants is ideal.

The Importance of the Archive

One of the biggest purposes in writing this blog is to record every plant in my garden with its full name. Acer palmatum Butterfly, Diospyros virginiana, Ziziphus jujuba Li, Heliopsis helianthoides... Each one rare, each one valuable, each one a heritage we leave for the future.
